Objective: To determine client suitability, identify the correct fluence (joules/cm²), and ensure skin tolerance prior to full laser hair removal treatments.
1. Prerequisites & Consultation
Before applying any laser pulses, complete the mandatory intake screening:

Medical Clearance: Verify no contraindications exist (e.g., active pregnancy, photosensitizing medications like Accutane within 6 months, active skin infections, or history of keloids).

Recent Sun Exposure: Confirm no active tanning, fake tan, or sunbeds within the last 4 weeks.

Skin & Hair Assessment: Evaluate the treatment area using the Fitzpatrick Skin Type scale (Types I–VI) to select appropriate starting parameters.
2. Preparation Checklist

Sanitization: Cleanse the patch test area with a mild, alcohol-free skin prep solution.

Hair Removal: Ensure the test site is freshly shaved (ideally 12–24 hours prior) with no visible surface hair, which can absorb surface energy and cause superficial burns.

Safety Gear: Both the practitioner and the client must wear wavelength-specific laser safety eyewear before powering or unlocking the laser device.
3. Patch Test Procedure
1.Mark Test Sites:Pre-Treatment Setup.
Grid out 2–3 small areas (approx. 2cm x 2cm) in the intended treatment zone using a white cosmetic pencil. Avoid dark ink or markers as they absorb laser energy.
2.Apply Cooling Gel (If applicable):Skin Protection.
Apply a thin, even layer of chilled ultrasound gel if required by the specific laser device technology (e.g., diode or IPL systems).
3.Deliver Test Pulses:Parameter Verification.
Deliver 2–3 test pulses in the first test box using conservative starting settings based on the client's Fitzpatrick type. Increase fluence incrementally (1–2 Joules) for subsequent test boxes to find the optimal therapeutic window.
4.Immediate Assessment:Post-Pulse Check.
Wipe away gel and observe the immediate skin response for 10–15 minutes. Mild erythema (redness) and perifollicular edema (slight swelling around hair follicles) indicate a positive, expected response.
5.Post-Care & Documentation:Client Discharge.
Apply soothing aloe vera or post-laser cooling cream. Record exact test locations, fluences, pulse durations, and spot sizes in the client's Beauty Sculpt chart.
